23. Lovers
130 words
If I were sane, I’d give up on Kelly and move on. My dear Kelly has finally succeeded in seducing my sweet Carolyn, I can see it on her face when I bump into them at the mall (I’ve always been good at that). Still, I choose to get close to Carolyn and whisper in her ear, watching Kelly’s beautiful green eyes narrow in anger-
-(I’ve told her before that she shouldn’t do that because of wrinkles, but does she listen? No…)-
-and she gets the funniest twitch in her right eye when she gets jealous. Carolyn, of course, tries to lessen the damage by tugging me towards an ice-cream booth. She can’t see the smug look I send Kelly, but she knows me well enough to smack me in the head.
Sanity is a lot less fun than following your heart.
24. Family
Sometimes though, following your heart is painful. I was able to pretend that everything was still peachy for a day, but then Carolyn came over and asked me if I was still in love with Kelly.
I think it was the bluntness of her question that tore away the veil of lies I was telling myself. I had lost Kelly to the woman in front of me, I hadn’t had a claim to her since I broke things off in college. But I had been hoping that Carolyn would eventually push her away because she was scared; and now Carolyn had gotten past that.
I had lost Kelly in terms of romance and Carolyn realized that before I did. So she held me as I cried for my own foolishness, and told me that it would be okay because the three of us were family.
We were Carolyn’s family; and she refused to lose either of us.
25. Strangers
100 words
Whispers always followed Carolyn as she walked down the street. People would stop and stare at someone who was outwardly different, especially when the someone is an unescorted blind woman. Once they were done staring, a fair amount of men and children always tried to escort her across the street, driven by society’s rules of politeness. She usually shooed them off because those rules also applied to the elderly and it was bad enough that people referred to her walking stick as a cane.
But now some people were whispering for another reason. Two attractive women holding hands as they walked through the streets always attracted attention; but two women who also kissed attracted more.
