BBC: Mud wipes out Philippines village

Boston Globe: Survivor of Philippine landslide: 'So many died. Our village is gone'

cindyg has also linked to a Yahoo news alert in her post.

as of the time of writing, 33 bodies have been recovered. some 1,500 - 2,500 people are still missing and feared dead.

caught a few snatches of the gma-7 public service program emergency on TV. learned that so many have died of landslides in the leyte region alone. this is perhaps the biggest amount of damage suffered by the region since the ormoc tragedy in 1991, which claimed 5,000 lives.

and this happening so soon after the wowowee incident...

may need time to fix this up, phone reception was choppy tonight, but in brief these are the significant developments to ruvic rea's case: on valentine's day, around 9:30 pm, a group of armed men raided the lucban bgy. captain's bar, harrassing the customers and the workers there. no one was hurt, but ruvic and steven were not present to witness it.

ruvic learned of the raid at around 11 pm. she went to the police asking for a warrant, at least, but there was absolutely no documentation about the raid. she was told that venzuela and other higher local officials commanded the raid be carried out, saying it had something to do with her business permit still being withheld.

agapay has personally approached ruvic and steven asking for forgiveness; he said he was only dragged into the inquiry that led to ruvic's assault. ruvic and steven both said they believed and forgave him, and would try to seek lesser damages for him, but they were not going to drop the charges.

will update as soon as i learn more.
