i've been watching... a lot of anime. well, it's a lot for my standards. so, apologies for not being more present.
i've decided to flash-review some titles, just for posterity. sorry for not being detailed, i can't seem to focus today...
Detroit Metal City - Episode 1 and 2

This one won me over with the energetic metal opening theme alone. Then the main character was introduced, and I was hooked. This is such a funny and clever series; even if the humor gets crass sometimes, the slapstick just helps to accentuate the absurdity of the whole situation.
DMC is definitely not an anime for kids. Lots of swearing, sex jokes, toilet humor, references to blood and rape, and heavy metal music herein. The band playing in it is pretty talented, though.
Mouryou no Hako - Episode 1

Very pretty, but fucks with continuity in a way I do not like. This is supposed to be a horror mystery, but I'm not all that interested in knowing exactly what's going on.
This blog says it best about the incomplete information in the first ep, but I'm still not sure I want to follow through with this series.
And goddd I hate the music. Then again, I don't think I ever was a big fan of newer VKei. It surprised me that this was the band that did the OP for Claymore and Death Note, because i somewhat enjoyed the one for DN - although the kickass visuals might be to blame for this.
Ga-Rei -Zero- - Episode 1

Is intriguing. VERY intriguing. It's also a surprisingly nice change of pace after all the slow-moving titles I tend to go for. This is still slow-moving, but pretty engaging visually... and there's so much crash-and-burn going on, with timely doses of gore, to keep anyone at the edge of their seat.
Plus, awesome motorcycle is awesome.
Kuroshitsuji - Episode 1

Mukuro Sebastian is even hotter in the anime than in the manga, if that's even possible. He's certainly a lot more impressive - with the bastard-in-the-mansion scene and everything. Also, I really, really like the shade of blue in Ciel's remaining eye.
They changed the storyline and the progression of events a bit, but I'm okay with its pacing right now.
Natsume Yuujinchou - Episode 1

The premise started off interesting, then took a swift turn for the absurd. I have a lot of questions, among which are:
1) why would a kid suddenly decide to give random youkai back their names, even after he's been told that some of them are MASSIVELY EVIL?
2) you mean even if his grandmother died at a young age, he NEVER opened his inheritance box, and youkai NEVER tried to find it in his house before he came to his grandmother's birthplace, preferring to chase him around instead?
3) why would the kid agree to give the book to the cat at the end of his life? sheer apathy?
I feel like I'm supposed to swallow all this and think it's cool. But I'm going to give this series another go and hope that my questions are answered - or that as with other great anime like
mushishi, the questions eventually stop mattering.
PS: The boy fails to catch my curiosity. The cat (who is actually some sort of wolf) is neither cute nor funny. I suppose this is just a really bad introduction to them, though. I do believe they'll pick up in future eps.
