Sometimes Ryeowook wonders how they end up like this, Jongwoon curled up against him and clutching him like he’s the last lifeline that the other man has. Sometimes he wonders if he really is.
Ryeowook is always the one to fix him.
He’s always the one to see the first cracks in Jongwoon’s seemingly perfect exterior, the slightly fake smile or eye twitch the lets him know it’s just the beginning. He knows how Jongwoon is, that the older man isn’t nearly as sure of himself as he lets on, that sometimes everything just gets to be too much for him.
It’s how they end up where they are now, cloistered in their room late at night as Ryeowook just lets Jongwoon break, slowly but surely, when they haven’t been sleeping and Jongwoon hasn’t been eating and everything becomes too much. It doesn’t happen often, the two of them used to this kind of treatment after years and years of the same, but now and again it does, and Ryeowook knows the signs.
It’s why he cradles Jongwoon’s face in his hands, whispering nonsense softly as his thumbs brush away the tears from the corners of Jongwoon’s eyes, and tells him that it’s okay. That he’s allowed to break, that he doesn’t need to hold it in on account of Ryeowook.
And no one else can see, because it isn’t proper, it isn’t what’s expected of either of them, but in the privacy of their room Ryeowook can hold Jongwoon as tightly as he wants, lets warm tears wet his collar, run his hands through tangled hair.
Ryeowook does this because he knows Jongwoon would do the same for him, has done the same, and what they have isn’t something normal, isn’t a one way street. It’s something that goes beyond the levels of a simple relationship, it’s something all encompassing.
It’s that that has Ryeowook up until the sun breaks through the curtains of their room, Jongwoon’s head in his lap as the older man peacefully sleeps, even though Ryeowook’s eyes haven’t drooped all night.
It’s why Jongwoon doesn’t have to say thank you when his clouded eyes crack open, instead kissing the corner of Ryeowook’s eye gently before softly catching his lips in his. There’s enough years of living and loving between them that they don’t need to say it, and they both know it.
Ryeowook smiles against Jongwoon’s lips, because words have always been so inconsequential when they can speak like this instead.
(And he knows Jongwoon will always be there for him when his time comes, when he’s gasping for breath backstage because he can’t do this he can’t be what they want or what they expect. But then there’s Jongwoon with soft eyes and even softer words to tell him he can, to brush his bangs from his face and lean their foreheads together and let him breathe.
And so he can go on.)
