Academic news

So, Anita neglecting her LJ again? No big news there. ^_^
Anita loaded with work at this time of the year? No news at all.
But now there’s a new element to consider.
The School of Journalism, where I work, has finally become a Faculty. Yes, we’re now part of the new Faculty of Communications, History and Social Sciences. Not only that, the former director of the School of Journalism (my boss, in other words) has been elected as Dean of the Faculty.
And he wants to open a new major course (as in field of study or career… I’m not really sure of the equivalence of the academic terms!), to start the Faculty with a bang, I guess. So he joined efforts with the Universidad Complutense of Spain, and they sent us a professor to help us with the process.
Then he told me to work closely with the visiting professor. Now, this lady is a serious, important person and I’m pretty much her slave. So she has me even MORE loaded with work than usual… I’m at the point of wanting to hide under my desk every time she’s around, fearing that she’ll ask me to do some big, important, impossible task!!! She’s so wise and stern that I feel like an insect when she looks at me. -_-;
That’s not a pleasant sensation and I’m not used at feeling that way AT ALL! I’m usually very sure of myself, but this woman… makes me feel like I’m the intellectual equivalent of a fly.
Thanks God the students are in their usual, annual strike since last Wednesday, so I’m a little more relaxed.
And well… they say every effort has its rewards. Apparently mine is going to have a BIG reward. We have an academic position here, called “jefe de carrera”, who’s in pretty much in charge of the students and the administrative issues of a specific major (or career. Can somebody please help me clarify this?). I think it’s something like the Head of Department in the US. Well, the Dean offered me this position. And wow, it’s such a big step for me… I know, it’s not a sure thing. After all, we’re barely starting the studies to know if this new major is viable, so there's a possibility it can all end up in a big nothing.
But still. It's a great chance for me. And I only have to endure our guest for two monts, after that she'll be back to Spain and I'll be a minor academic goddess. ^_^
So I’m busy… and that’s why I disappeared for such a long time. Let’s hope that the strike will last at least a couple of weeks, so I can write another update before the end-of-the-semester frenzy starts.
That’s all for now… Oh, Connie is big, healthy and beautiful. Here’s a pic of my little family I wanted to share with all my friends!!
