Just Start: Find the Time to Make Your Dream Come True

Yesterday another YA author died from cancer. I didn't know Bridget Zinn other than through an auction I participated in to raise money for her medical expenses. But I was pulled in by her story, by the way she and her boyfriend got married in the hospital after her diagnosis. Isn't that beautiful? I think they had another wedding later on, too, but what a gift he must have been to her, to hear that scary diagnosis and give that promise that he would be with her no matter what, every step of the way. I love love

I've been hearing lots of sad news lately. And as I posted last week, we had our own scare with my sister's car accident, though luckily for us, ours ended in good news. And it's just really been reminding me how much we take for granted. Every day that we have is precious. Every day that our loved ones are safe is a gift. I'm reminded that although there are many things that I want, but don't yet have, what I do have is a lot. And although we have a ton of responsibilities and must-dos, if there's something we really want to do, we can make time for that, too. Even though it feels like there aren't enough hours in the day.

Sometimes I look at extremely prolific writers, or people who play many roles in life and manage to get it all done, and I think HOW? How in the world do they do all of that? But time is a funny thing. It expands and contracts depending on circumstances. Like in graduate school, when I was taking a class in psychopharmacology and the professor was clearly burnt out and chose to spend the three hour class each week reading to us from the text book, yeah, time stretched into forever. But when I'm writing fiction and in the flow and loving being in the world of the story, hours whiz by and suddenly it's time to go pick up the kids from school. (This is how I know I'm spending my time the right way )

So if there's something you want to do and you're not doing it because there isn't time, maybe see if actually there is. Start small if you need to. Anyone can find fifteen minutes in their day to dedicate to something they really and truly desire. As I posted in my Guide To Making Your Dreams Come True, big dreams start with baby steps.

Dreams may take a longer time than we'd wish to come true, but if we don't start somewhere, they never will. Even if you just write a half a page a day weekdays only, you could still have a whole novel written in less than a year. Whatever your dream may be, whether it's writing or dancing or becoming a doctor or whatever else your heart desires, go for it. Don't put it off.

I've mentioned this Goethe quote here before, but it bears reminding:
"Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness had genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now."
