getting out of here

It’s been a long time since I used this journal, and I’m impressed that the site has kept it alive. Good job live journal, you’re higher quality than I expected.

But here I am again, preparing for another international church trip, and using the journal. Actually, this next year is a lead up to a lot of traveling and time away from Vancouver.

At the end of school this year, I suddenly realized that I’m living in the house I’ve lived in since age one, working at the parish I’ve been going to since the same time, working at the high school I went to, and going to university in the town where I grew up, and after I get my education degree, I will probably work more at the high school.  Boring! I need to experience something else, somewhere else, before I get tied down to a career and a retirement plan.

So, my supervisor recommended the education program at Queens. They have outdoor experiential education electives where I could learn how to work camping and hiking and kayaking and boat-building into the curriculum.  Plus, their program is highly based on using the leadership skills, knowledge, and experience you already have to enhance the education experience. To me, that sounds like a fresh promise, especially compared to the drudgery that I’ve heard about UBC education. So, I bit the bullet and signed up for a year of psych (the only requirement that Queens and UBC don’t share), and I’m going to have to start figuring out a budget asap.  Hello Kingston!! I’m unbelievably excited about living outside Vancouver for a year. I think I’ll appreciate this place more when I return.

As well, I think I want to see a bit more of the world. WYD Cologne was great, but the best part of it was actually Medj. So, I want to add on to the Sydney experience. Of course, we’re going to New Zealand for our Days in the Diocese, but that doesn’t really seem like enough to me, especially if I’ve flown all the way around the world. So, I’m thinking that I’ll (along with some friends) head up the Gold Coast, see Uncle Peter, and then fly over to Vietnam for two weeks on the way home. I’ve just started looking into accommodation, and it’s really inexpensive to get a good place to stay.

In the short space of a few months, the next two years of my life have really changed, and I couldn’t be happier!
