They had been exiled to the furthest reaches of Wonderland, and thus the coldest, and boringest. Both had been deprived of their weapons aside from the weapons that were their essence and minds. To make sure they didn't go anywhere or do anything very quickly the Queen of Hearts and Jack were shackled to each other. There was about a meter of chain between them allowing the barest amount of privacy.

Neither of them liked it. Neither of them liked each other right now. They could agree on very few things and their ankles quickly chaffed raw. And even after a painful truse their ankles continued to be battered by their wills.

They could agree on one thing: it was cold. Consequently they talked frequently about the temperature often repeating back and forth to each other "I'm cold" and crossing their arms with a pout or a scowl.

So when there was a disagreement about the temperature you would have expected the Queen of Hearts and Jack to self destruct. However, when the Queen of Hearts awoke one morning and prompted Jack with "I'm cold" and he didn't reply this was not what happened.

Instead, the Queen of Hearts' eyes snapped open. "I'm cold, Jack." She complained again. When there was still no reciprocal reply the Queen of Hearts propped herself up on her elbow and shook the shoulder of the man who slept next to her. "Wake up you sleepy head!" she barked. "I'm cold."

Jack stirred and then turned onto his back with a sigh. "I heard you. I'm not cold."

The Queen of Hearts fell back with a happy sigh. "Yes, I'm cold...too..." She replied quickly and without thought, but halfway through she realized what Jack had said. She sat up. "Wait, what do you mean you're not cold? How can you not be cold? We've been agreeing about this for the past fifty days."

"I mean exactly what I said. I'm just not cold today." Jack replied. "Maybe it's getting warmer."

"Are you saying there's something wrong with me?" The Queen of Hearts demanded.

"Of course there's something wrong with you." Jack muttered.

The Queen of Hearts growled, but exile had softened the fight in her, marginally. "There's something wrong with you too, One-Eyed Jack. Hmph, bested by a young girl too. At least it was only biology that thwarted me."

"And your sister." Jack reminded.

"Don't remind me of her."

"And Alice. Again."

"Shut your mouth!"

Jack's teeth clicked and the Queen of Hearts smiled. But the silence was false and the sound of Jack's mouth closing was only Jack's response to burning niggle in his nose.

"Hnkx'khhh-H'H'H'H'RRUHSSSH! H'H'HK-H'HRRUSSSH!"

"There's something wrong with you."
