I was watching Channel 1 News (A news show that is specially designed for schools, and, without trying to, makes a remark about the commercialization and the capatilization of America that would be hard to be find in such an obvious way anywhere else. It's includes groundbreaking information, such as the fact that tanning can cause skin cancer (That was one of the head news stories for August 19, 2004. Maybe I'm being ridiculous, but if your a news program aren't you supposed to provide us with new information?), commercials for everything from acne cream to skittles, and every top 40 song that they can possibly fit into the program) the other day, and it really insulted me that my principal insists that each teacher at our school must make his/her students watch this program. I don't go to school to watch commercials, and I seriously doubt a program such as this has anything to do with me learning the Spanish language. So, while I was sitting there in class, I wrote an essay to vent out my anger. This is what I wrote:

"Channel 1 should give us real news instead of telling us that Google is going to start selling stock. I don't think something as commercialized as this show should be forced upon us. The goal of Channel 1 News seems to be to provide students with the news in the most sugarcoated way possible. They need to come back to reality, and stop acting like teenagers are ignorant or don't give a damn about the world. They need to tell us the truth. Stop sugarcoating everything, and tell us why we're really at war. Tell us the truth about how an overpopulated world might affect us. Tell us why acres of trees are being cut down every day. Tell us why after preaching abstinence and deciding to leave protection out of our health class curriculum, people get so shocked when girls come to school pregnant. Tell us why we're forced to take and teachers are told to obsess over a test that our president made mandatory, but wouldn't be able to pass if his life was on the line. Tell us the truth. We're not scared, but we need to know. There are already to many lies in the world."
