Colbert Makes Migrant Workers the Butt of His Latest Joke

Jun 25, 2010 18:05

Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central's, The Colbert Report, is helping migrant farm workers with their challenge to members of Congress and the unemployed of America - take our jobs. One of the main arguments of those opposed to illegal immigration (though let's face it, everyone should be opposed because it's a CRIME) is that migrant workers steal jobs from American workers who are unemployed and willing to do the work.

The problem with this "challenge" is that many farms hire illegal immigrants, particularly from Mexico, because they don't want to pay the higher wages to legal residents. By doing so, it would mean that they'd have to deal with state labor laws. Also, if legal residents working as farm laborers were dissatisfied with work conditions, they might threaten to unionize, or strike until their demands are met (as with other businesses).

In promoting this, Colbert isn't proving the immigration opposers wrong. Instead, he's proving a point to the illegal migrant workers that they're hired because they're cheap labor and the farmers who hire them are out to skirt responsibility of running a legitimate business. It may end up blowing up in his face.
