Facebook reactions

So, for those of you don't spend your time there (perhaps wisely), Facebook have introduced Reactions, so instead of just being able to 'Like' posts, you can choose one of six icons to indicate Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, or Angry.

It's fascinating watching the process of developing a new shared vocabulary. Nobody quite knows which ones to use when or how to interpret reactions yet. It's Ok to make terribly inappropriate responses just now because everyone knows that we don't know what they mean. Whether it continues to be the done thing to respond inappropriately for the lulz ("Tasty dinner! [food snap]" -> Angry.) is something we'll find out. I suspect not.

I'm certainly finding that the new ones are far too extreme to express my actual reaction to most posts. You can tell they're not British: unaccountably Facebook failed to include the brief eyebrow flash of recognition, the barely-perceptible half-chuckle, the slightly raised eyebrow, the turned down corner of mouth, the quick glance skyward, and, of course, the tut.

The other obvious omission is "yuck", given Baroness Greenfield's prescient concerns: "It’s not going to destroy the planet but is it going to be a planet worth living in if you have a load of breezy people who go around saying yaka-wow.".

I think that's the best Facebook Reactions reaction: Yaka-wow!
