Where the sun meets the sky
He’s in a semi conscious dream state when the alarm goes off. Donghae slams his hand on the snooze button and considers continuing to sleep. But his eyes are already half open so he kicks the sheets off and rolls out of bed. Staggering, he makes his way to the window, pushes the curtains aside and is met with the slowly lightening early morning sky. Squinting towards the clock he sees it’s almost six. He’s on time. Just barely, but there it is. Sunrise. He smiles and, leaning against the window sill, he waits.

A few hours later, Donghae is dressed for school and with a piece of toast for breakfast in his mouth, he heads out the door. Jogging down his front steps, he pauses when he reaches the landing and a smile spreads across his lips when he sees a familiar figure. He sneaks up to the boy with his hair sticking up in all directions who leans on a lamppost on the sidewalk.
“Don’t you have anything better to do than stalk me?”
Hyukjae jumps and turns around, eyes narrowed. “Since when is waiting for your best friend considered stalking?”
Donghae ignores the question opting to hit Hyukjae lightly across the head. “You didn’t even brush your hair this morning. No wonder no girl will go out with you.”
“Look who’s talking” Hyukjae scoffs and starts smoothing out his hair, making it messier if possible.
Rolling his eyes, Donghae smacks his hands away and starts brushing his fingers through Hyukjae’s hair, untangling it gently “Let me do it.”
“I can brush my own hair, jackass” Hyukjae protests, but doesn’t push Donghae’s hands away.
“There” Donghae smiles satisfied with his work. “By the way, I think it’s cute how you insist on walking me to school everyday.”
Hyukjae rolls his eyes and, after shoving Donghae, they start walking. “You’re house is on my way to school. Plus, the one time I didn’t wait for you, you ignored me for like a week.”
“Wasn’t that back in fourth grade?”
“Fifth”
“Right. The year you peed your pants in math class.”
“That was second grade. It was art class and you said you’d never bring it up again!”
“Yeah, whatever. Doesn’t change the fact you peed your pants during class.”
“Yah!”

It’s late. The school is practically empty by now, but Donghae sits on the rooftop, back against a wall. He can see the sun dipping in the horizon. The colors of the sky turn from bright blue to an array of shades. Tinges of oranges, purples, violets and pinks. Sometimes red. The preface of a sunset. All those incandescent colors and lights fascinate him. It’s like watching the same painting everyday transform, the artist using different palettes to surprise its audience.
Donghae closes his eyes, feeling the sun through his closed eyelids. He creates his own sunset in his mind to compare it to the real one when he eventually opens them again.
“Thought you’d be up here.”
Donghae smiles but doesn’t open his eyes. He listens to Hyukjae’s foot steps approaching him.
“Ouch” he yelps when he feels a hard kick at his shin, eyes shot open and glaring. “That hurt, you ass.”
Hyukjae smirks sliding down the wall next to him. “I’ll never understand your weird obsession with the sun.”
Donghae makes a face and goes back to closing his eyes. “It’s not weird. Lots of people happen to enjoy watching sunsets and sunrises.”
“But everyday? Without missing it? I’m sorry, but that’s obsessive. And weird.”
Donghae goes to say something back when he feels a persistent poke at his side. Opening his eyes, he sees a granola bar in Hyukjae’s hand. Lips pursed, Donghae gives Hyukjae a weird look.
Hyukjae shrugs. “I know you won’t leave until after sunset, and that won’t be until after six. If I’m hungry I figured you’d be too.”
Smiling, Donghae takes the bar and after peeling the wrapper off, he sinks his teeth into it.
“What?” Hyukjae asks at the grin on Donghae’s face. It’s muffled since his mouth is full and he looks kind of stupid with chocolate smeared around his mouth.
Donghae only grins bigger.
“You’re so weird” Hyukjae rolls his eyes.
Donghae turns towards the sun, not looking at it but picking out the colors that play in the sky. “You love me anyways.”
“There’s a difference between loving and putting up with someone.”
“Whatever you say, Hyukjae.”

The wind blows harshly so Donghae digs his hands deep into his coat pockets, wrapping the coat more tightly around himself. A favorite song plays in his ears; he hums it out loud sharing it with those who can’t hear it.
Starting to bop his head to the beat, he’s completed startled when he feels a smack at the back of his head.
“Didn’t you hear me calling you?”
He growls at Hyukjae, rubbing the back of his head and rolls up the ear buds that were just knocked out of his ears. “No. And do you always have to be such an idiot?” He starts walking, not caring if Hyukjae follows or not. He does of course, so Donghae asks “Didn’t you have soccer practice until late?”
“It was cancelled.” Side stepping so a girl walking a dog can pass, Hyukjae turns his body towards Donghae, his elbow pressed against Donghae’s arm. The girl passes, but he doesn’t move. “I texted you.”
Donghae shrugs, watching the few leaves hanging off the trees. He shoots Hyukjae a look when Hyukjae jabs him with his elbow and moves closer.
“You’re acting all spacey today” he smirks. “Well, more than usual.”
“Funny” Shoving him, Donghae laughs mockingly. “Stop invading my personal bubble, Hyukjae.”
At this Hyukjae’s eyebrows shoot up. “You want me to stop invading your personal space? You, who’s been all over me since we were in diapers?”
“I’ve never been all over you. Man, you’re so full of yourself.”
Hyukjae laughs, pushing into Donghae as they walk. “Please. You’ve been all over me like chocolate on a strawberry for as long as I can remember.”
Donghae starts pushing back, until he trips and sends them both to the floor. Hyukjae starts punching him, so Donghae punches back not even trying to miss and they both get in a couple of good hits, not even caring if they leave bruises.
“Enough! Enough!” Hyukjae pleads breathlessly and rolls over, pushing Donghae against the ground and straddling his waist. He raises his hands to block Donghae’s fists. “Truce!”
Donghae narrows his eyes but lessens the tension in his fists. “Fine” he waits until Hyukjae is getting off of him to say “But only ‘cause you wimped out.”
Gaping, Hyukjae lunges himself at him, not even caring they’re in the middle of the sidewalk. “Oh, you’re going to regret that.”
Laughing, Donghae defends himself from the attack and after he rolls them onto the grass of the quad, he pins Hyukjae to the ground beneath him. Both breathless and laughing, they stare at each other with what could be considered silly grins on their faces but neither notice.
“Get off” Hyukjae wiggles trying to kick him.
“No” Donghae says and lowers his head to Hyukjae’s neck, his nose tickling his skin.
“Like I said, all over me like chocolate on a marshmallow.”
Lifting his head, Donghae frowns at him. “Wasn’t it on a strawberry?”
Hyukjae shakes his head and laughs. “Point is, get off!” he pushes Donghae off and sits up, picking leaves and twigs out of his hair. “What’ve you been eating lately? You weigh a ton.”
Ignoring him, Donghae raises a hand and pulls a particularly large leaf from Hyukjae’s hair. “You’re such a mess.”
“Yeah” Hyukjae gets up and after dusting himself off offers his hand to Donghae. Donghae takes it and as Hyukjae starts pulling him up, he says “But you love me anyways” he then lets go, causing Donghae to fall flat on his ass.
Donghae watches him run off with a raised eyebrow. He smiles softly and gets up and runs after Hyukjae.

Another sunset. Another color palette. The temperature is surprisingly warm for autumn, as are the warm hues of orange and red in the sky.
Donghae inhales then scrunches his nose when the smell of something burning fills the air. A man smoking passes by and he unconsciously inhales that discomfortingly familiar scent.
“I’m glad you quit.”
Hyukjae looks up from his game consol, brows furrowed. He inhales suddenly, reminding Donghae of a dog making him chuckle. Hyukjae shrugs and goes back to his game. “It was getting old. I mean, it looks cool at first but after a while your mouth starts tasting gross even to yourself.”
“Hmmm”
“What?” Hyukjae asks, bothered.
“Nothing” Donghae looks at him through the corner of his eye, rolling his eyes when Hyukjae shoves him. “It’s just weird. You smoked for a whole year and then when I finally tell you it bothered me, suddenly, you quit.”
Fingers frozen on the controls, Hyukjae looks up at Donghae, making a face. “I didn’t quit because of you.”
“Okay.”
“I didn’t” he insists. “I got tired of always having to check my breath before going home.”
“Hey, whatever lets you sleep at night.” Donghae senses Hyukjae’s stare and knows Hyukjae won’t let it go. He rolls his eyes and snatches the game from his hands. “I believe you, okay? You’re right, I’m wrong. All is right with the world.” he plays until he completes a level but can’t keep from biting his tongue. “Though, you seemed to take it pretty seriously when I said I’d never kiss you if you tasted like an ashtray.”
He looks at Hyukjae, mouth open in protest, but Donghae beats him to it. “But I’d never kiss you anyways so it was really for nothing.”
Something flashes across Hyukjae’s eyes and he lowers his gaze to Donghae’s mouth. He tilts his head, licks his lower lip and inches his face towards Donghae’s. “Oh yeah?” he asks, his voice strangely lower than Donghae’s ever heard it. Donghae watches him, shocked and then Hyukjae’s face is close, too close. When he’s so near, their noses would brush if Donghae so much as breathed, Hyukjae licks his bottom lip again. “How much you wanna bet?”
“Uhhh” Donghae blinks, having a hard time remembering what they were even talking about and wondering why Hyukjae is talking about bets at a time like this.
When he moves in even closer making Donghae suck in a breath, Hyukjae smiles and pulls away, the epitome of smugness.
Donghae inhales, his lungs feeling desperate for air. Hyukjae won’t stop smiling so he shoves his head, hard. “Shut up”
Folding his arms across his chest, Hyukjae leans against the bench, that smile turning into a smirk. Having had enough, Donghae gets up and starts walking away. “You can sit there and smile yourself to death. I’m going to go eat.”
“Hey! Donghae! Wait up” Hyukjae calls running to catch up with him. “I’m hungry too.”
*
“In some countries this is considered romantic.”
Donghae shoots him a side ways glance.
“Couples watch the sun set over the beach. Shit like that.”
“Are you trying to turn this into a date?”
“No” Hyukjae scoffs. “It’s a random fact. I was just throwing it out there.”
“Uhmm” Donghae finishes off his bag of chips. “You’re such a dork.”
Yawning, Hyukjae stretches his arms to the sides, smacking Donghae in the face with his hand.
Donghae yells, exaggerating his pain and grabs Hyukjae’s hand. He yanks it making Hyukjae’s head fall on his lap. Donghae runs his hands through Hyukjae’s hair, caressing his scalp slightly. Until Hyukjae’s dozing off and he shakes him. “Get up!”
“Aish. I’m sleepy. Stop!” Hyukjae buries his head deeper into Donghae’s thigh, clutching to his knee.
Sighing, Donghae lets him be. He watches the sky until it turns so dark he can’t make out the colors anymore. When the first stars start appearing, he shakes Hyukjae awake deciding he’s ready to go home.
*
Groaning, Donghae smacks the hand trying to wake him. He rolls onto his stomach, hugging a pillow.
“Ouch” he mumbles groggily when that same hand smacks his butt.
“Donghae” Hyukjae says for the hundredth time, wondering why he even bothers.
“Let me sleep, you ass” Donghae hugs the pillow harder, sinking his nose into the soft fabric. He registers inhaling the fragrance of Hyukjae’s shampoo and he sighs.
“Fine, but when you realize you’ve missed the sunrise don’t come crying to me.”
“Ehhh?” Donghae sits up at a surprisingly fast speed and jumps out of bed, dragging Hyukjae by the hand.
Outside on Hyukjae’s balcony, they lean against the banister. Hyukjae struggles to keep his eyes open, but he shakes his head when Donghae tells him to go back to sleep.
The sky is beautiful, darker blues playing with lighter ones, swirling with soft violets and bright yellows. But Donghae is distracted by Hyukjae’s messy hair, his baggy sweats hanging off his bony hips and his wrinkled t-shirt. And he thinks, maybe Hyukjae understands a lot more than either of them thought. He smiles and, pushing off the banister, stands behind Hyukjae. Wrapping his arms around his waist, Donghae squeezes his sides until Hyukjae protests, but doesn’t let go, arms planked and unmoving. He holds him tight, feeling Hyukjae’s heart beat fast and steady in synch with his own.
“You were right” he tells Hyukjae, chin rested on his shoulder. “This is romantic.”
“I was talking about sunsets” Hyukjae grumbles, turning his face to Donghae.
Shrugging, Donghae starts pressing kisses to Hyukjae’s neck. “Sunsets. Sunrises” his lips brush Hyukjae’s skin as he speaks in between kisses. “You. Me. It’s all the same.”
“I thought you said you’d never kiss me” Hyukjae points out when the kisses have reached his cheek.
Donghae looks up at the sky that’s just a bit different than yesterday, seeing more orange than he did the day before. “Yeah, well things change” lips against the corner of his mouth, Hyukjae turns his head that bit more and their lips meet.
They pull away after a few seconds, Hyukjae turned around completely Donghae’s arms. Donghae bites his lip. “Next time I’ll wait until you’ve brushed your teeth.”
Hyukjae yells outraged and tries to shove him away. Donghae laughs and pushes him against the banister and goes to kiss him again. Moving his head back, Hyukjae fends him off and he scowls. Donghae retaliates by letting go of his waist to grab his face between his hands to keep him in place.
“No!” Hyukjae tries to sound serious, but he can’t fight his smile. “Now it’s me who doesn’t want to kiss you.”
Cocking his eyebrow, Donghae presses his body into Hyukjae’s, making Hyukjae catch his breath, a shudder pass through both their bodies when their hips meet, hipbones sharp against hipbones. “Please. You want to kiss me like cheese on macaroni.”
“That’s not how it wor-” he’s cut off by Donghae kissing him. Arms flailing for a moment, Hyukjae sighs and weaves his fingers through Donghae’s hair, soft in comparison to his rough hold. He presses further into Donghae’s body and his hands lower onto his nape to keep him there, mouth and heart against his.
By the time they stop, the sun has risen completely and Donghae’s positive he’s never seen a more unique or fascinatingly beautiful morning until now.

a/n: Tee prompted me with a verse from "Shadow of the day" by Linking Park and this came out. It talks about the sun so maybe this isn't totally a failure (at least it's not angsty) This is inspired by all those times Hyukjae call Hae a weirdo on Sukira and amazing pics people take of sunsets and sunrises i found on tumblr and we♥it.
