Terri Schiavo died during the night. The nation is in tears. How can we as a benevolent and free people let such an ungodly tragedy to happen? Alot of people here in FL and indeed all around the country are hurt and awakened to this sort of "humane killing." They will fly banners saying "Don't forget Terri." They will look on her as a crusader for humans rights and a martyr of the Man. NO. I will pray for her soul. She should never have died and should never have been allowed to die. But thats the extent of my sympathies. My reaction to this whole fiasco is "meh." The way I see this is an innocent woman was starved to death. Now as a result, alot of people are pissed off. I am also, but not for the same reasons. Thousands of innocent women die every day in the third world. No one cares. We see it on the news and change the Christian Children's Fund commercials thinking "oh thats too bad..." But the second it happens to one, white, AMERICAN woman, well hells bells, children! The only reason so many people gave a red rats ass about Terri Schiavo is because she was an American woman with a juicy scandal surrounding her and had proper media coverage. That is not to say that is the only reason 'anyone' cared. I know for a fact that people out of the goodness of their hearts would have protested outside the hospice regardless of scandal or media. I and my fellow students protested because she was an human being dying a painful, unjust, murder. These are the same people who give up their saturday mornings to pray outside Planned Parenthoods all over the city/state/country. These people are hard core. But the truth of it is, because of those factors, people around the country were up in arms. Remember those Christian Children's Fund commercials? How many Americans turn the station when they come on? Why? Are they not innocent? Are they not starving? Are they not...someone else's problem? Thats the thing. They are not Americans. They are not the proper color. Their husbands are not living in sin and killing off their wives with Fox News on their heels. Ergo- who cares? I see it all the time on the news. "400 Palestinians were killed in a mass suicide bombing today" America: "Oh that's too bad, but its not our problem." "And 7 Americans were hospitalized." America: :"OUTRAGEOUS!!" The point is that we don't care about injury, death or illness because of human life. We care only if A- they are Americans and B- if they are useful to America. History shows this beautifully. We help them if and only it helps us more in the end. Terri Schiavo should never have died or been allowed to die. The fact that her parents (her PARENTS) were not allowed to be by her side in her last hours is truly monstrous. But I can only shrug my shoulders, pray for her and say life goes on. Remember Hugh Finn? No? Funny...I do. I was outside Anneburg Manor too. Millions of Terris are dying daily around the world. But hey, it's not they matter. it's not like they're real people. It's not like they're...Americans. So change the channel and turn up the Garth Brooks. Its the American way...
