It's amazing how much time it takes to unpack. The move went quickly (same building, so moving everything took less than four hours), the unpacking took about two days except for the box of sewing that I am afraid to open, but the organizing is a nightmare. This place is smaller than my old one, but it lacks the beeping crosswalk indicator under the window, so I certainly do not regret the move.
So far, the minuses of this place are:
- It is smaller. A lot smaller.
- The bathroom door doesn't latch, which is a problem when company is over since a cat always has to open the door in less than a second after the butt hits the toilet and I can't reach the door from the toilet.
- There is a horrible corpse smell in the hallway outside which everyone claims is not from their apartment.
- No good place for the litter box, so that has to live in the bathroom.
- No storage in the kitchen except for the two tiny cupboards above the sink.
- The 18" by 18" support column is two feet in front of the stove
The plusses are:
- It is a lot quieter. Still more noise than most would like, but it is good for downtown.
- The closet in the bathroom has a door, so I can keep the cat fur off of my clothing
- Since it is quieter, I can keep the blinds open and enjoy the light.
- The layout is such that I was able to fit all my stuff in
- The cats are adjusting.
- The view when lying in bed is the sky. At night, the low clouds glow slightly from the reflection of the city. This looks really interesting against the black sky.
- The view from the 'kitchen' is a big tourist draw that everyone is so thrilled about. I don't quite understand the big fuss, but it is far prettier than the bus station and I can wave at tourist boats going past.
The orange cat, Minnie, freaked out really bad when I first starting moving stuff up the night before the big move. She was climbing on me, purring in a weird panicked way, and was just not in a good way. I finally grabbed her and explained that I was not leaving her behind or giving her to some random stranger on Houston street, which is how I ended up with her. It was like a switched was flipped and she calmed right down. The poor thing thought she was being abandoned.
Jayne and 'Zilla adjusted in a pretty normal time frame. Sir Meeps a Lot was scared for a few days and acted normal with one exception after that. He has taken to howling in the middle of the night. He's not sick, he's not in pain, he's just being a little bastard. I've gotten frustrated enough that I tell Minnie to sic him, which leads to about three minutes of intense fighting before silence reigns again.
I need to take some pictures of the new place to post. So far, it's pretty happy.
