Title: Be My Valentine
Author: angelps_7
Rating: PG
Word Count: 410
Notes/Warning: Aw… this one just melts my heart. I hope it melts yours. Here’s some kiddy flashbacks =) I tried to recall what it felt like to be a little kid during Valentine’s day, all the innocent, fantastic, giddy emotions, which is ironic seeing as this is for Day 4: Moulin Rouge lol! Based on: “A life without love, that's... terrible...”
Hermione sat under the tree by the swings and turned over her her pink, heart-decorated box. Dozens of candies and colorful cards fell out, each with a catchy phrase and a loopy, sloppy signature. She searched through the cards, giggling at some of their jokes and blushing at the ones given to her by some of the boys.
Looking up, she saw a skinny, blonde boy sit on a swing. He sat there by himself for about five minutes, silently staring off into the distance and not swinging.
Hermione approached him. "Hi."
He gave her a strange look.
"I'm Hermione. What's your name?"
“Draco.”
She stepped closer and peered at him. "Are you okay?"
“Don't I look okay?”
“You look sad. And today's Valentine's Day, you can't be sad on Valentine's Day!”
He stared at her blankly.
“You've never heard of it?”
He shook his head.
“It's the day to celebrate love!” she giggled.
“Oh. I don't know much about that, then.”
Hermione stared at him. "Why not?"
He shrugged. "My parents aren't as mushy as yours are," he said, gesturing to Hermione's parents who sat across the park.
“They just love each other.”
“Mine don’t act like that.”
"But... A life without love? That's terrible..."
“It's not terrible. And they do love me.”
“But... you don't have any Valentines."”
He shrugged and looked down again.
Hermione hopped off the swing and ran back to her tree. She grabbed a blank card with a large, red heart on it, and signed her name at the bottom.
She dashed back to the swings and handed it to him. “Be my Valentine. I’ll be yours.”
He took it, eyes wide and looking extremely surprised. "What's this?"
“It's a Valentine. I want you to have it.”
“I can’t -”
“Please. Remember it as your first Valentine, from me.”
For the first time that day Draco smiled, and he pocketed the card. "Thank you," he said sincerely.
****
Draco hummed to himself as he pulled the card out of his top drawer. He hoped she'd be surprised seeing it tonight, after so many years.
He closed his eyes, recalling its words. "Always remember that true love is never far way."
Smiling, he placed it on the center of their dining room table, surrounded by candles and roses.
Hermione might not even remember giving it to him, or even how much it meant to him, but Draco knew it was the best gift he'd ever received.
