The table in the dining room was set to perfection, the restaurant food laid on the plates just as artistically as star-studded chefs would do. However, the table was set by hand. Who would’ve thought that Draco Malfoy would put so much care in a task he thought only good enough for a house elf?
But things had changed during the last year. He had a whirlwind romance with Hermione Granger, and she had showed him so many new things in life, that now he wondered how he’d ever managed to live without her.
Christmas was coming soon, and unlike many years before, he didn’t hate the upcoming holiday season. This year, it would not be filled with mundane functions at other pureblood homes. He would spend the holidays together with his love.
Draco checked his appearance once again in the mirror. Of course he looked as good as he could, the fine dress robes falling perfectly over his toned body.
‘Draco, you wanted to see me today?’ came her voice from the entryway of his flat. He had owled her this morning letting her know that he would be delighted to have her company tonight.
‘Yes, I did,’ he said and looked at her admiringly. Even though she was dishevelled and an ink smear adorned her cheek she looked as beautiful to him as if she were all dressed up.
‘I don’t think I have a lot of time tonight, though…. Work paperwork is never ending,’ she answered, shedding her grimy Auror’s cloak.
‘You may just change your mind,’ he smiled and led her to the set table.
She smiled at him as she saw the intricately set table and wondered if he once again had ordered a house elf from the Manor to do the house work. It didn’t matter to her now as she was ravenous. All the time through dinner it seemed that draco wanted to tell her something but held off. If only he’d know that she wanted to tell him something as well…
Finally, Draco spoke up as they began dessert.
‘I know this may come as a surprise, but I love you so much, Hermione, that I have to ask you now. Please make me a happy wizard and marry me?’ Draco had hoped that his proposal sounded good. He had never been more serious about something in his life.
With trembling hands he presented her the ring box which contained the Malfoy diamond, a ten carat princess cut perfectly clear diamond set in platinum.
Hermione flushed, looking at the ring in the box. Gods, it was gorgeous. And Draco had been so heartfelt. How could she do this?
She let her eyes meet his hopeful gaze, and she choked back a tear.
‘Don’t cry love. Just tell me what you think,’ he said soothingly, hoping that it would be a ‘yes’.
‘Draco, I’m so sorry!’ she broke out in sobs,’ but I can’t accept. In fact, I was going to break up with you tonight. I hoped to make it fast and painless.’
‘I don’t understand,’ Draco muttered, looking confused.
‘I don’t love you anymore. I’ve met someone else. I just didn’t know how to tell you this, as you’ve always seemed so happy when with me.’ She stopped sobbing and dropped the ring box on the table, hastily standing up.
‘At least tell me who it is you chose over me,’ he asked somberly, trying to hide his breaking heart from her.
‘I guess I can tell you as it will soon be all over the press anyways. I’m in love with Harry,’ she stopped at his questioning gaze, ’Potter. After his break up with Ginny we started talking and one thing leads to another…’
Draco didn’t say a word as he watched her put on her cloak.
‘I hope you find happiness, Draco.’ With a silent pop she Apparated away, leaving Draco absolutely heartbroken and shattered.
No one ever knew why Draco Malfoy would go into a raging fit when someone mentioned Christmas to him. Just as no one knew why Draco stormed out of a restaurant when an idiot in love was proposing to his harpy.
No one knew about what had happened to Malfoy, except Mrs Hermione Potter, who didn’t feel a least a bit sorry. The year she spent pretending to be in love with Draco Malfoy was a hoax. A secret mission to find out whether the Malfoys were behind Dark object smuggling. No one knew of it, of course, it was Top Secret.
