I like Drama Prince so much! Ups and downs of parenting aside, I just really adore the little baby person he is. I like that (for the moment) he's sociable. I like listening to him babble away in his crib for an hour when he wakes up. I like the way he laughs when he's happy ( Read more... )

Lots of picture books are now published in board book format, whether or not the content is age appropriate - one of my HUGE pet peeves. But yeah, he'll eat them for a while. But he is also learning how to hold a book, turn a page, pay attention, look at pictures while listening to text, beginning-middle-end conventions, climax and resolution conventions, and a whole lot of cultural baggage too. It's fabulous!

Seriously. I had kids in Chicago who were 6, 7 years old and didn't know how to physically manipulate a book - much less listen and learn and absorb any of the story. It was tragic. Other kids, 1 or 2 years old, can hold a book in the right direction, turn a page, wait with suspense for the resolution, recognize which characters are important and which are not, and importantly, Guess what the next word or line will be - that's the first step to reading. And I know 1-2 year olds who can sight read a variety of words.

A will be DP's favourite letter, so please get into the habit of showing him all of the A words that you see out in public. He'll love it.

Most important (beyond language skills and literacy) is the socialization aspect - this is cuddle time, so milk it as much as you can. :)

I can't wait til DP discovers CRAYONS, too. !
