In Need of Books

Dec 12, 2006 08:31

I'm looking for book recs. I'm in the mood for a novel, something reasonably light and easy. I'd also consider non-fiction, as long as it's on the topic of something fun/hopeful and won't make me feel like the world is going to hell in a handbasket. I need a break from that.

Recommendations?

response: twenty plus, books

Geek Love, by Cathy (Kathy?) Acker.

Also, I reccomend "Funny Boy". It's about an odball young boy (who is kind of inconsequentally gay) growing up in Sri Lanka.

I negelected to tell you that Geek Love is about a 3rd generation carnival family that breeds its own freak show and loves each other humungously.

See, I've read Geek Love a few times, and that is the opposite of the impression I have of it... great books are like that, though.

Oh, by LOVE I really mean that they have a convoluted yet tight and highly disfunctional family relationship. But I do think it's a kind of love and that it's really intense.

I LOVE that book.

I dunno - maybe it's my own dysfunctional perspective, but dependancy =/= love, and that book is all about dependancy - born of isolation and also of intent, on the parents part ( ... )

It's by Katherine Dunn, not Kathy Acker.
