Freddy vs. Jason slayed the competition in the weekend box-office rankings, taking first place in its debut, with about $36.4 million for the three days starting Aug. 15, the Hollywood trade papers reported. That was more than the combined total for the entire theatrical runs of the last installments in either the Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th franchise, the Associated Press reported.

Last year's Jason X, the 10th Friday the 13th movie, topped out at $12.6 million, while 1994's Wes Craven's New Nightmare, the seventh in that series, grossed $18.1 million, the AP reported.
