CHAP 8

Teijal held onto the human, gently stroking her hair as Rhen laid sleeping in her lap. Uncharacteristically, she had stopped before it could escalate further beyond heated touching and kissing. She had so wanted to continue, but thought it was far too soon, once her dead brain cells were working again.

She had a soft side. Shit.

A vampire with a gentle side was never good.

Her clan would probably laugh at her.

Oh screw them to hell, the sleeping human was her top priority now.

Teijal shook her head. This wasn't normal lust.

Teijal leant down and kissed the human's cheek, memorizing her skin.

No, this was different.

Beat

The sound did not surprise her.

Beat. Heartbeat.

That sound led her to this human, how could she not have seen it before? She should have known after the first taste of her blood.

Dark damning gods above, she, the vampire without a soul, had found her mate! It seemed fate was playing its cruel games again and she growled. But…she won't fight it, no she promised in her dead rotting heart she would protect her….love, the word bringing a repulsive yet strangely satisfying flavor to her mouth. Teijal felt the human whimper and curl herself more into the vampire. No, she could definitely get use to this…love.

---------------------

The next day was covered in clouds. Overcast…Perfect. Teijal and Rhen moved again though at a more leisure pace. Ever since that night, Teijal had begun to observe the human discretely, to find anything that could disprove her findings and, to her delight/horror, could not.

Rhen felt confused yet elate. Whatever the vampire did, it seemed someone had finally dived in and saved the little drowning girl in her. She felt as if the large chain strangling her had fallen away. She could now sense the power at her fingertips and if felt good.

The human noticed other things of the vampire besides her eyes. Even through the cloak, her mind drew a mental picture of what Teijal's body looked like. This was where she belonged, near the vampire. But, what would happen when they reach Shadwood Academy? Would Teijal leave her then? Abandon her? The human reacted to these negative thoughts by quickening her steps and wrapped her arms around the vampire making her stop. Teijal was surprised but warmed by the human's sudden affection. (Warm?! hmm… she was becoming mushy. yep)

"Rhen?" She asked quietly, not turning.

She heard the human mumble something into her cloak and turned around to pull Rhen closer to her. "Yes?"

The human took a deep breath before asking, averting her eyes. "Will you leave me when we reach the Academy?"

Teijal gently pushed the human's head to face her as she answered, "If you want me to." If Rhen wished for her to go, she would. I mean, who would want her to hang around?

"No, I want you to stay with me." The human muttered, tightening her grip around Teijal.

"No, I want you to stay with me."

with me.

"Why?" The vampire's voice was rough with emotion. She needed to know.

The human stayed silent for a moment, dipping down into her newly released heart. It was there; she found it, that little word that spoke volumes.

"Because.."

"Yes?"

"Because I love you."

The human burrowed herself into the vampire's arms, savoring the feel.

There, she said it, straight from her heart. She didn't know how the vampire felt for her, but didn't matter nor would she take her words back: Rhen loved Teijal.

The vampire stood shock, her arms went slightly slack before the words reverberated through her skull: Her mate loves her, her.

She ripped herself from Rhen's touch as if it burned while talking agitatedly, "How can you love me? The crazy vampire who attacked you, who almost killed you?"

The human answered naturally, trusting her heart to not let her down. "But you didn't. You always stopped." She said simply taking a step toward the irate vampire.

"Because I love you." She said stronger. Yes, she did. Was love blind and deaf? Apparently.

"Do you … not feel for me?" She had laid her heart out and seeing the vampire so vehemently rejecting her hurt so much.

The vampire could deny right now that she felt nothing for the human. She could be unselfish and let the human find someone else who could love her correctly, not her twisted love. She was a vampire. This would never work.

Who was she kidding?

Growling she looked deep into Rhen's eyes and saw it all there. Screw everyone else, she was a selfish egotistic vampire anyway.

Teijal fairly ran to Rhen and kissed the human, letting her irrational dirty feelings come through. So the world was going to curse their union, who asked them anyway?

Once she released Rhen fair lips, her own curled into a smile as she said "I love you too, Rhen."

Rhen smiled and for once, a sparkle could be seen from her eyes. The smile was still there as Teijal dipped her head for another kiss.

The women were unaware, but if they looked down on the floor, they would have noticed their shadows merged into a single entity when they kissed.  The merged shadows twisted into the form of a blackbird. The bird rose up from the ground and surrounded them.

Teijal noticed the darkness and opened her eyes to notice the shadows around her. She almost lashed out at it until she noticed the way it felt, just like Rhen.

She quirked her brow at Rhen who only shrugged with a smirk. Her human was definitely getting a devilish sense of humor.

Her human.

Now that definitely sounded good.

They shared a quiet laugh before their close proximity was too far away for either, and smashed themselves against each other.

Their adventures had just begun, but two lonely souls finally found what they had been looking for: real love. It wasn't going to be easy, a vampire and a human. But once you leave out the genetics of it, they were just two women in love.

And that's all that mattered.

The End.
