LJ just begged JM for the Superman DVD. Now she's in the beanbag, Bear-Bear half over her head and dummy in her mouth, watching the Man of Steel battle through cartoons 30 times older than her.
She's basically in position for her morning sleep. And she's asked for Superman every day this week, around nap time. JM and I were talking, and we think we've figured it out - the old cartoons are the only non-interactive shows she watches on TV. Everything else... Dora the Explorer, Blue's Clues, Hi-5 - demand some level of participation or response from the little ones. All Superman wants you to do is sit back, watch and enjoy.
I wonder if perhaps TV's gone too far in trying to engage and stimulate children. It's fantastic the way the box can help educate kids, but there may well be call for more passive, less demanding shows to allow them to wind down.
