“I had a dream once, Sammy.” The flask rose to his lips out of habit and he sucked the amber liquid without thought. “I was going to save this city, make it a better place.”
“Can’t save the world,” Sam said, taking the offered flask. “Only do the best you can.”
“That’s just it though. I can do better.”
“Live the dream?”
“Why not. Never too late. Besides, I’ve got you to be my picky-arse conscience now.”
“Apparently, that’s why I’m here, Gov.”
Gene wondered if the devil or the man upstairs had sent this man to sit on his shoulder.
