I was on the phone with Mom this evening, and she told me that Dad's friend Tommy had seen what he thought were beavers at our pond when he was fishing there several weeks ago. Dad went to investigate, because beavers could not stay at the pond, as they would dismantle the dam. Strangely enough, he discovered that they were otters! SO COOL!
Anybody that's ever been to a zoo or an aquarium with me can tell you that I think otters are just about the coolest animals in the whole world. I've even joked about hiring an otter to live in the pond. I am way excited about this.
The only problem is that otters dine on the catfish and bass that the pond is stocked with, and Dad doesn't want them to eat the fish, because a few people do come fish at the pond. Now, I can understand that. But really, will a few otters really eat ALL those fish??
He's thinking about getting them caught and moved somewhere else. Mom reports that he's a little wavery about it, because he's as much of a softy as we are, and he really does have a squishy spot for cute and funny animals (which otters be, to the biggest of being of extents). I am for the preservation of otters. Mom said she buttered him up tonight by telling him how river otters like them will play on the snow and ice in the wintertime, and how cute they will be, and wouldn't he just love to see that? He got a little smushy, and admitted that he had sat on the hill by the pond and watched them play and frolic for a half an hour, and how much he knew Austin would love to see 'em. I think we might have official farm otters. How cool is that?
