Seriously... most impressive. There's a firefly knitting group that might be interested in your design (even if it is crochet) - bigdamnknitters or something like that.
I have been looking for this pattern for three days and I never dreamed I'd find an exact replica with instructions like this .... you are a goddess! Thank you so much. And, by the way, excellent craftswomanship!
So Awesome!

I am sooooo happy to find this pattern, and it is so well done! I have been wanting to make this vest since my first viewing of Firefly and this desire has only grown through multiple viewings! Thank you so very very much.
The tie bit is, if I recall correctly, a chain with a sc worked into each link. It's not attached; I just made a chain that looked about 50% longer than it needed to be, worked a sc into each chain, and then threaded it through the gaps and tied. (I don't remember how long the chain was.)
How far up does the mesh on the sides go? Look at the picture. It goes about halfway up the fishnet on the sides. (It's been a while; I don't remember exactly how far up I took it.) I'd suggest trying it on just before you add the mesh, and marking with a safety pin how high you want it to go.
Thanks for this excellent pattern. I made it and wore it to my local Can't Stop the Serenity event. I also posted about it at my new blog: http://jossisahottie.com/whedoncraft/2008/07/29/river-tam-vest/ You can see the pictures of me in it there, as well.

I realize that this is an old pattern, but I had a couple of questions.
1. What is the tie part, and how is it attached? It looks too thick to be a chain.
2. For the "*ch 3, 2 dc*" rows along the sides, how far up do those go?
Thanks,
Laura
