Red(neck) State

Sep 30, 2011 09:20

A sampling of this week's headlines put our state in such a good light. NOT!

  • The nationwide scandal in which one of our own is the poster boy for legislator's egregiously lucrative pension plans (while trying to cut everyone else's retirement benefits).
  • Gas prices are falling! Let's raise the gasoline tax!
  • Drive-by shooting of a donkey and a llama
  • One of the highest unemployment figures in the nation

Ugh. OK, I realize not all of these made national news, but they did all make the paper. Yes, someone did do a drive-by on the donkey and llama. shakes head I wonder if it was the cow gang from two farms over.

...and to complete my irrational disgust with the week, I found a dead duck in the reflecting pond at work this morning.

One Pet Fu

I woke up to three out of four cats snoozing on the bed with us. Josie tried to shove me off the bed by refusing to move when I tried to shift away from the edge of the bed (spoiled kitty!). Kiera allowed me to pet her once before she realized I was awake and moving. One pet was all I got before she dove off the bed and made a run for the door. Sigh. I cannot understand why that cat is mortally afraid of us.

Further Tinfoil Hat Musings

It suddenly occurred to me that all these social networking sites are merely echo chambers in which we collect acquaintances and pen pals that give us feedback that only reinforces our views rather than challenging them. I think that may be one of the issues I have with MyLiveFaceDiaryBookLandJournalWitter. We each may have the token protester from the opposing viewpoint to give us the feeling we are being "fair-minded", But if you self-select that everyone around you is like you, there will rapidly become no room in your universe for people who aren't like you.

I'm sure I can muse further on this point, but I'm not sure where it would go just yet....

politics, random musings, news, cats
