Porn Spam

I recently read an interesting quote in this porn spam Email. It went something like: “Nothing maddens man more than utter sanity.” That’s a pretty cool quote. I think there’s some paradoxical truth to that statement. Or… some truth to that paradoxical statement. Either way, I like it.

Ever notice how your view of the world seems so clear to you, but there are just certain things about it that nobody can ever quite see your way? Certain things may make perfect sense to you, but there’s just no way to explain it to the confused others. Why can’t we all agree with each other and live in perfect harmony? Because we all see the world a little differently. And in some cases, a lot differently. I think we’ve done an OK job though. I mean, look at us. We’re still here. Humans I mean. I think that we, as a species, are capable of destroying and killing each other off much quicker than we’re doing. We’re staying calm. Getting along… for the most part. Not getting too up in other people’s business. Keep in mind, I’m talking about the human species right now, not the United States of America. We’ve had the technology to make it happen for quite a long time now. And, thanks to our cognitive abilities to realize our own mortality, we have not pushed the button. Or should I say - buttons?

Oh, don’t worry. I’m sure we’ll live up to our potential someday and totally kill each other off.

Sometimes I think I’m a little crazy. Because, perhaps, I like and appreciate something far more than most other people do. For instance, it makes me sick how cool I think the music to Super Mario Bros is. But then I think about why I do appreciate it so much, and then it makes tons of sense, and then I’m sanely loving the music to Super Mario Bros while all the others must be totally insane not to understand what is so great about it. Sorry about that atrocious sentence. I got a little carried away.

I happen to be talking about Super Mario Bros music because I just listened to it. I’ve downloaded this Super Mario Bros Medley. Yeah, that’s right… MP3.

Some day we, or somebody else, will be saying, “Remember MP3s?”
And other people will be replying, “Yeah, I remember those silly things.”
To which the others respond in agreement (and in unison), “Yeah!”

Dang, I think a kid is dying outside. What curdling shrieks of mortal horror I hear bellowing from the neighborhood kids outside. If I was capable of being scared right now, I’d be terribly frightened. But no… I AM WRITING! I have no time for fear. Not right now.

So, like I was saying, I saw this really cool quote in this porn advertisement. I’m pretty sure it was a porn ad, anyway. One thing that made me think it must be a porn ad was the array of ridiculously fluorescent colors. Another thing that made me think that it might be a porn ad was the fact that it also displayed an array of naked women.

But all of that is beside the point. Never mind where the quote comes from. Just think about what it means for a moment.

“Nothing maddens man more than utter sanity.”

To me, this idea explains a little about art.
Art. What is it? I don’t know and I’m not going to pretend to know. But I am, however, still going to pretend to be smart. So, bear with me.

I’m not even so sure that the quote “explains” anything really. But it does make you, or in my case, me think about perception and reality, and sanity. Creating art, in any form, allows you to escape from reality, if only for a short while. It lets you explore areas of thought and imagination that you normally would ignore. And it allows for expression of these seemingly insane thoughts to be perceived by others within the realm of the sane.

So, what is better art? Art than can be easily understood by others? Or art that others have difficulty understanding?

Art is truth. Real truth. The only tangible expression of truth. If there is not honesty in a work of art, then I find it unlikely to actually be art.

But again, what is art? Who knows? Could be anything.

I like art, but I hate being an artist. See, that should be a quote right there. Maybe it is. I don’t know. Since I don’t know, I will end this thing with an awesome riddle:

The CEO happily and gratefully says, “I am not an artist; I am a CEO.”
The artist happily and gratefully says, “I am not a CEO, I am an artist.”

Q: Who, then, happily and gratefully says, “I am not a CEO or an artist?”

A: The middle-class.

Durp!
