This is a placeholder post. Someone remind me to make a real one when I get back from New Mexico.

Writing the Life on Mars/Silent Hill crossover for rionaleonhart has been one of the most awkward (and rewarding) ficcing-linguistics experiences I've had in a while, because LoM is a British television series and, as a result, all the main characters are British. Now, British and American cultures are much more similar than, say, American and Indian cultures (which I need to navigate for an upcoming project of mine... yipes), but still, in writing, I find myself stopping every few minutes to go "Wait. Would this character say this? What about that one? Is this even used there, or is it faux-British, or is it what Americans think Brits say?" And then there are the cultural quirks, and I'm not talking about driving on the other side of the road.

So, rionaleonhart has been wonderful, leading me by the hand through things I should know, and it's been an experience unlike any I've had before, and I really should do a post on the process. (I come out of it feeling really very dense after Riona corrects me for the thousandth time, but she's incredibly nice about it, and I've very glad I managed to get over my fear of extended correction and solicit her help.)

Also, remind me to do a meta-iron-curtain-post about the challenges of working around expectation bias, and hopefully I'll still know what that means a week and change from now.
