National Holiday - The Remainder of the Holiday in Dongying

Oct 26, 2013 20:00

The thing about this vacation was that technically I was supposed to work the 30.September, but by the time that I learned that. I had already bought my plane tickets. Starting the Tuesday after the break I picked up another class that happens twice a week (Tuesday and Friday 10-12:00). So I was thoroughly enjoying the time I spent not working. There was a lot of going to bed late and sleeping in. There was a birthday party and a lot of other activities going on.

I had figured that after the National Holiday break that the Water House Guy would lower the price on the white puppies if they hadn’t been bought. I found out that the dogs had their shots which cost 200 RMB and that 1000 RMB was the price of the dog. A few students helped translate; a couple kids that I didn’t know and then one of my English Major students. The guy wouldn’t even agree to lower the price knowing I would have to return the dog when I left China for good. It finally came out that the puppies were poodle puppies and those are expensive dogs in China.

Suddenly everything made sense about the dogs. When I first came last year there were lots of homeless dogs around and since they might have rabies, etc., Chinese people pretty much ignore them. The puppies’ mother was one of those dogs. And I watched as the Water House guy fed the dog and cleaned her up and took care of her. They don’t seem to care here if the dog is a purebred as long as it looks like the breed they are happy. So I think the water house guy realised that he could get a poodle for free and then bank on future puppies.

Jade and I made an epic trip to Dongdu the cheap shopping place in Dongying. I got some rugs for my room which was nice. In Shenzhen my shoelace on my waterproof hiking boots that doubled as winter and rain boots snapped so I went to find a new pair at Dongdu (where I got the last pair) But instead I got a pair of rain boots, the Saturday after the first week back to class (since it was still a vacation from my little kid class), along with a leather winter jacket and Jade and I ordered a custom-made winter jacket for her. While we were doing that I got a call from my boss saying I was supposed to be at my Monday class even though it was Saturday (that no one told me about) so the class was re-rescheduled.

In the end it was a great vacation, one of the best I’ve had!
