John is the first thing he sees when he opens his eyes. Bobby blinks a couple of times, rubs at his eyes just to make sure.
John doesn’t disappear. He’s really there.
“Breakfast?” John asks, and Bobby notices the smell of burnt toast in the air.
Well, John never was that great at cooking, but Bobby can appreciate the gesture.
They eat in silence, but it’s not awkward or uncomfortable in any way. Just Bobby slathering butter and marmalade on his toast in hopes of it tasting less like cardboard, and John chewing thoughtfully and staring into space.
“You weren’t expecting me to stick around,” John says as he collects the plates.
Bobby doesn’t answer, because he knows it wasn’t a question.
“I’m not planning on running,” John says, dropping the cutlery into the sink, and he already seems far too at ease in Bobby’s kitchen.
But then, he always was arrogant, and Bobby feels a familiar rush of affectionate warmth.
“Never again,” John whispers, stepping closer, and Bobby swallows thickly, and it’s a different kind of heat that surges through him at the sincerity in John’s voice.
