When she sees him out walking down the street from her window it’s like her heart starts beating again. It’s like when she first saw Hugh, only this time she isn’t half mad, living in some abandoned warehouse, living off tramps and drunks and addicts. This time she is clear headed. It is not love at first sight, she has no fantasies about making him like her, of creating another companion. This time she sees another chance, something normal, something equal. She sees life and beauty. She sees lust and desire. She sees life, And a chance to pretend.

As he looks at her, trapped behind the force shield, he finally understands what he’s been hiding for far too long.
In a moment of stark clarity, he finally admits to himself what he can never admit to her.
He can’t leave her, he won’t leave her, not here, not like this. Never.
He needs her to be his second in command and needs her to be his voice of reason in a crisis. He needs to hear her laugh and see her smile.
He just needs her.
In his life, in his future, in his everything.
He loves her.
The words aren’t said, not out loud at least, but they are clearly spelled out in his eyes…
…and reflected back in hers.
