It's one brilliant, shining moment in the midst of a dark war. The boy's hand on your shoulder, the concern in his eyes, the way he insists that there must be something he and his friends can do. He reminds you of his mother, the fair hair, the pale skin, the slope of his nose. You would never have noticed such an inconsequential detail as his nose if it hadn't been Loren's and that's when you know. You already knew, somewhere in your hearts, but now you're certain and you smile at him, with your eyes, and how you wish you could smile with a mouth as you used to do. Your blood coats his hands, his long fingers that look like Loren's, staining the skin as blue as Earth's sky and you tell him to run. You wish he could stay, you wish there could be a way to live and know him, but if you live tonight your son will die, so all you can do is give him a weapon and tell him to run. It's only one moment of pain in so many before it but his hands are stained blue, like your blood, like your fur, like the sky in Yosemite on a cigarette ad from so long ago and you die with his touch still lingering on your skin.
