The earliest memory I have of my brother is a few days after he returned from his strange disappearance. I was very young, and still wary of the large, grown stranger with the sad eyes who claimed to be my kin.

He took me out to perform our morning rituals together, but his movements were stiff and hesitant, without the fluid elegance that I had grown accustomed to seeing in grown Andalites.

< Have you forgotten how to do the morning ritual? > I wondered with the uncensored curiosity that children of any species possess.

He seemed surprised for a moment, then shook his head -- an odd gesture which I'd never seen before his return. He always looked almost guilty afterwards, as if it was a motion that should have been checked.

< Of course not, > he replied, and almost looked as if there was something else he wanted to say, but he didn't. Instead, perhaps a little too quickly, he added, < Come, Aximili. There's something I wish to show you ( ... )

Something to Rely On

Mal's well aware he's being stubborn as he takes his seat on the bridge, making a deliberate show of ignoring her sitting there across from him.

Can see you smiling over there, he thinks, cause he can see out the corner of his eye that she's got that little grin on he usually thinks is damn cute. Now though, he's feeling it's unbearably smug, and he keeps his eyes off her, paying more attention to switches and charts than he has in months.

After a minute or two, she sighs and stretches out one long leg over her section of console, just far enough that the pale flash of foot catches his gaze, and she's not giggling yet, but he can just feel it hanging in the air, waiting.

“You look like a duck when you pout,” she says, and when he spins around, open-mouthed, to refute that ridiculous notion, he's insulted once again, cause she ain't even looking at him, staring up at the ceiling instead like it's the most fascinating thing in the ' ( ... )
