If things were different, we might not be here. If not for the Law of Seerow's Kindness my brother might not have died giving human children the technology to morph, and I might never have been saved; but if not for the actions the law was named after, the Yeerks would never have reached Earth, and I would still be on the homeworld.
If things were different, I might not feel a connection with you. If you were not trapped in morph, if you were not cut off from your people nearly as completely as I was cut off from mine, if you were not so kind to a lost young alien on a strange new world, you might be just another human to me, just one of six billion humans I was supposed to save.
If things were different, I might be able to close that connection. If not for the Law of Seerow's Kindess, if you were not a human mind in a hawk's body, if you were not quite so alien to me, I might be able to speak freely to you, to tell you of my family and my people and my home, to tell you my secrets and to mourn my brother with you.
If things were different, Tobias, we might have been friends.
