My experience with hurricanes is rather limited. Last year the state was raked by three storms (Ivan, Frances and Jeanne), but all were only tropical storms when the passed through North Georgia. Of these, Ivan was by far the worst - not for the wind or rain - but the large number of tornados that it spawned. But the only hurricane that 'felt' like a hurricane was Opal in 1995. Even 300 miles inland, winds hit nearly 70 mph and most of the city was without power. Normally, it would take 10 minutes to drive to GaTech - but that day it was close to 45 minutes, as I had to weave around downed powerlines, tree limbs and even trees that covered most of the street (BTW, I got to work only to find that they had close Tech).
Currently I live 30 miles outside of Atlanta, on large upland rise. I've experienced hurricane remnants/tropical storms, severe lightning storms (twice the pole next to house has been hit), wicked tornado outbreaks and even a nasty ice storm earlier this year. When I lived in the NE, I had endured some hellacious blizzards during the 1970's and 80's. But the only storms that I don't like are tornados at night - when a siren goes off at 2 AM its a rather unnerving experience..
Today's Questions:
Have you ever been in a hurricane or even a tropical storm? How were you affected?
Have you ever seen a tornado or driven/viewed an area hit by a large one?
What is the longest have you gone without power/water in a storm related incident -etc? What is the worst natural disaster you have experienced? (this can include floods, earthquakes, -etc.)
