Walking, thinking, and overhearing

*Rachel couldn't bring herself to go back to the labs after chatting with Carson. She wandered around, nodding absently at people that greeted her. She wasn't terribly sure what to feel. Heartache, that his love may simply be a reflection of hers? Guilt, that she could inflict such emotion on someone as to make them do odd things? Despair, that she'd have to keep away from Radek due to the uncertainty of his emotions? She'd already seen what getting upset around him did, and she never wanted to make him hurt like that. Hell, let's throw self-loathing into the mix, she thought to herself. He said it himself, he never noticed you before you touched that damned machine. Of course it had to be too good to be true.*

*She rounded a corridor, only to stop short when she heard her name and a familiar voice come from an open doorway. A second female voice replied.*

Bridges: So then, MacGregor throws me out of the lab. I'm likely on the next ship home. Bitch.

Voice 2: No Way! Can she do that?

Bridges: She can, now that she runs the lab. Amazing what perks you get for fucking the boss, hmm?

Voice 2: It's a wonder she works at all. I mean, between the Colonel, Dr. Zelenka, Dr. Beckett, AND Dr. McKay, I'm surprised she can walk. Really, if she's gonna convert a bunch of queers, shouldn't she have to share once they're back to normal?

Bridges: *snickering* Indeed. *sarcastic tone* Come on, honey, they're fixed. Now pass 'em along...

*Rachel is frozen in place for a moment, then turns and starts running. She's blindly blowing past people, headed only for her room. She bursts through the door, using her gene to nearly slam it closed and lock it behind her. The humiliation and shame make her thoughts skitter in all directions. Rae's gaze alight on the violin case on the shelf...*

*before she knows it, she's got the case on the table and open, tightening her bow. A quick check across the strings and a small adjustment bring Sally into tune, and Rachel immediately starts playing a haunting piece from a Czech folk story about a girl who was driven mad from the lies vindictive jealous girls in town told about her. Her eyes are closed as she plays, grimacing a little at how appropriate the tune is.
