Happy Mooseday!

In a bid to keep some connection with my youth, I spent this afternoon cheering on Cambridge United* (with cuthbertcross and babysaxon) in their bid to end a run of eight straight away defeats at high flying Woking. Or I would have been cheering if every sudden noise had not caused babysaxon to start crying. By the end of the game, we were all happy. babysaxon had had her milk and a little nap, and was much more tolerant of all the shouting. And Cambridge had won 1-0 with a cracking 25 yarder curled into the top corner.

Upon leaving the ground we were treated to a number of chants as the Cambridge hordes trooped back towards the car park. The finest of them was a classic piece of British self deprecating humour of the sort only the long-suffering supporter spawns: to the tune of "she'll be coming round the mountain", the Woking fans were informed "Well you really should be beating teams like us".

This reminded me of my favourite chant ever, from the crowd at the Oval where a New Zealand victory had meant that England replaced New Zealand as the worst test match-playing cricket team. The victorious New Zealand team were greeted with a chant of "You're not quite as shit as us."
