I don't want to write a long ranting post about the election. We've already seen a bunch of those. I don't want to talk about moving to Canada because that's ineffective. Instead, I'm going to share an email I got from my Canadian friend, Vikki, in response to an email I sent her yesterday morning. I wanted to get a more international prepective on what had just occured. I thought some of my faithful readers might also be interested in what she had to say:
Hey Rach,
You have every right and every reason to need to rant. I am just as
surprised and disappointed as you are, although the election has a
lesser implication on my life DIRECTLY.
There is a lot of interest in Canada, because we are so closely tied
to the states physicall, economically, basically in every possible
way. The election was a big deal here, it was broadcast in all the
bars and ppl are talking about still. There was even an impromptu
public lecture today by one of the politics profs on how it happened
and what it means for the future.
I was actually quite surprised by the outcome b/c for me, everyone I
know in the states was anti bush, and the media made it out to seem
like he was doomed...ppl interviewed, experts, I dont know, I totally
thought he was on the way out, so I am also confused as to what
happened. I can't imagine how much worse it must be IN you country.
I can't imagine the frustration and anger those who voted democratic
must be feeling right now...i mean its the kind of situaton where you
want to just get up and riot and protest and demand change, but what
more can you do?
Take it easy and don't worry...you have a huge amount of american ppl
on your side, and many ppl outside your country are on your side. Four
years seems ridiculously long right now, but it just gives the
democrats 4 yrs to plan and strategize and for Bush to again
demonstrate how ineffectual he is.
And remember if you ever need to leave your country for awhile you are
always welcome here...you can be my second cousin twice removed.
Chin up!!!!
Miss you,
Vikki
I know it's not a lot, but every little bit of support and encouragement makes me feel a little better.
