The Last Waltz - This is Where the Truth Begins - Preston Oct 3

Oct 04, 2008 03:28

I'm not going to try to do a proper review of every night of this marathon event, but I will do my best to share little bulletins and then do a proper write up at the end. So here's Act 1, Scene 1 from Preston tonight...

From the second the band burst onto the tiny stage tonight the energy crackled off them like sparks from dry wood. If this is a taster of what they mean by going out in style, then this tour is going to be sheer fucking magic. I've rarely seen them on such good form. They were incredible. Bouncing around the stage, chatting to the densely packed crowd, and belting out a corker of a set. The energy flowed between band and the enthusiastic audience, and it was impossible not to have a good time. No shadow of sadness here, this was a jubilant celebration of a band showing the world how brilliant they are, not a wake. Supported by good friend Kieran Leonard, and surrounded by their mainstay crew (Timmy, it appeared, has flown back from New Zealand to do this tour), the atmosphere was of a tightly knit unit hell bent on making the best of this last hurrah.
