goooooooooool!

the world cup started 5 days ago, and i've watched pretty much every game so far.  that should probably stop soon, as i still have thesis work to do and todd and i need to find an apartment for next fall.  but it's so much fun to watch!  and i figure, it's kind of like the olympics...it happens so rarely that it really does deserve my undivided attention.  :)  we don't get cable, though, so i'm watching most of it on univision.  i bet i'll have learned a good bit of soccer lingo by the end of the month.  like, for example, a fan is a fanatico.  and ball is pelota.  etc. etc.

anyway, i'm mostly following 3 teams: italy (forza azzurri!!), england, and japan.  italy had a good game yesterday, but they didn't play well enough for me to rest easy for their next two games against the US and the czech republic.  (though, if the US plays like it did against the czech republic, italy should be just fine...).  to be honest, other than the czech republic, none of the games i've seen have shown a decisive upper hand by one team over another.  which is great.  it means this should be a fun world cup final.  poor japan, though...they were doing so well, and then they just fell apart in the last 5 minutes of the second half.

so, apartments...yeah, we can't stay where we are because the landlord wants a full year committment, and we're probably heading out of cambridge in january or february.  it sucks a bit because it means moving on sept. 1, which is a nightmare here in boston/cambridge, but in the end it's probably for the best, because we can definitely downgrade to a smaller place, perhaps save some money in the process, and it'll force us to purge a bit.

how it all happened was a bit weird, though.  the lady who kind of minds the place for our landlord called me at some point in the first week of may to follow up on some maintenance that was supposed to be done on our place and hadn't yet happened.  at the end of that conversation, she casually asked if todd and i were planning to stay on.  i explained that we would likely stay in town for the fall term, but couldn't committ to more than that.  i thought we had left it as, "well, so that's our situation...if jim's ok with a partial year lease, we may stay, but we should probably discuss that formally."  well, so then on the 16th-ish of may (i know this because i was freaking out about my review at the time) the lady calls to ask me if she can show our place to some prospective tenants that day, as in, right then.  i said no.  i mean, we hadn't actually solidified that todd and i were moving out, and she wants to show the place without any advance notice...hell no!  just on principle (oh, and i wasn't sure how clean the place was...)

so anyway, about a week later, she calls again, this time asking if our current upstairs neighbors (who were looking for a larger apartment) could stop by and take a look at the place, the next day.  we knew the people and we were going to be around (and at this point had come to terms with the fact that we were expected to move out) that we said ok.  they came, they saw.  a couple of days later, i see my neighbor in the hall and ask him if he's taking the place...he says yes.  a couple of days after that, we get a note from our landlord telling us that we had until june 1 to tell him if we were planning to renew our lease, saying that after that date, he would start showing the place...
wha???
yes, so, a bit confusing.  whatever.  this landlord is ok, but definitely not the best.

oh, i watched cars yesterday.  it was cute.  i can't believe a bunch of animated cars almost made me cry.  i'm such a wus.

anywho.  that's it for now.  still wondering if i want to audition tonight...and i'm wondering if i should take that as a bad sign that i really don't want to do the show, or as a simple case of insecurity and anxiety...
