He was drinking his third cup of tea. She was eating her third piece of cake.

They’d been in the kitchen for nearly two hours by themselves. Elsie was obviously standing guard.

Since they’d sat down, he hadn’t uttered a word. She’d rabbited on about everything and nothing. He didn’t seem to mind. Perhaps he was scared of silence too.

She was half-way through telling him another frivolous tale about Ethel when he suddenly spoke.

“I was wondering, Mrs Patmore, would you help me arrange the funeral? I’m not sure if I’ll have all my wits about me the whole time. I’m worried I might forget a few details without someone to...”

He was staring down into his tea, so she took the opportunity to quickly dab the corners of her eyes with her handkerchief.

“It would be an honour,” she said with sincerity.

“One should never have to bury a child,” he whispered.

“No,” she agreed.

“But at least we have Daisy, right?”

She opened her mouth, but for once no sound came out.

“It won’t all be for nothing, will it?”

She took a steadying breath and placed her plump, pale hand over his. “Yes, you have Daisy.”
