Beryl Patmore left the cake to cool and retired to the servants hall, empty for once as most everyone had gone to the village.

For her part, Beryl was happy to stay in for biscuits and tea, enjoying a bit of quiet.

A hesitant rap stopped her just as she was about to sit.

“Hello?”

It was a shyly smiling Mr Mason, his hands twisting the brim of his hat nervously, before she moved to take it and his coat, hanging them behind the door.

“I come by to see Daisy, if it’s not too presumptuous.”

“I’m afraid Mr. Mason the lot are off to the village. His lordship gave us the morning as a bit of thank you now that the soldiers are gone.”

“Well deserved no doubt.”

“I should say so after having the army all throughout the place for so long. Well, sit down,” she commanded and fetched another cup of tea. “I know she’ll be happy to see you.”

He thanked her and tentatively sipped his tea, their conversation growing more comfortable as Mrs. Patmore tended to her baking. When the scent finally reached the table Mr. Mason smiled, “Is that honey cake?”

“Here now, aren’t you a sharp one. I’ve made it to celebrate things being back to normal.”

“It was William’s favorite. My sainted wife made three a week to keep up with him.”

“She must have. I couldn’t make one that William wasn’t begging the trimmings.”

“He was a good son,” he said, his voice weakened with emotion still.

“Here now, William deserves better than our tears.”

She disappeared into the kitchen for more biscuits, then stopped, eyeing the cake she had intended for the servants tea. She grabbed a knife and plate, cutting a generous slice. “Gaw, they won’t miss one piece.”
