Thought I'd better write something for the revamped comm! I hope the people who know me don't fall off their chairs!
She’d always enjoyed the Annual Hunters’ Ball.
As a child she’d secretly watched the guests in their finery waltzing across the dance floor long after bedtime.
After she came out, this ball became the first time she danced with Patrick.
Later, she’d always chosen her prettiest frock for this ball, hoping that maybe, just maybe, she might meet the one.
However, she felt no joy for the event this year. Mary was honeymooning, Sybil was confined, and she was the sad, spinster sister, still at Downton.
She’d had high hopes for tonight, thinking that perhaps she and Sir Anthony could start over. Yet, even though he was in attendance tonight, he hadn’t asked her to dance.
She glanced in his direction now, and realised he was preparing to leave.
Quickly, she made her way across the room. “Sir Anthony!” she puffed when she caught up with him in the foyer, about to be helped into his coat by Carson. “You can’t leave without at least one dance with me,” she pleaded, tears gathering in her eyes.
He grimaced and nodded towards his arm. “I’m afraid I would only embarrass you, Lady Edith.”
She flushed with shame. He’d not danced with her because of some form of gallantry? Foolish and misplaced gallantry, but gallantry nevertheless.
She linked her fingers with those of his ‘good’ arm’s hand, and drew him into the front parlour.
“Lady Edith...”
She hushed him, and placed her other hand upon the shoulder of his ‘dead’ arm.
Next, she moved her feet and began to guide him around the small room.
She peeked up and checked his expression. He didn’t look the least bit worried that a woman should be leading him.
She smiled and leaned her head against his chest.
