Mom's still lecturing me on the dangers of black magic.

I have, over the past semester, been discovering what the Indonesian music scene has been up to, and am delightedly surprised that, more than ever, I am liking what I hear. Gone are the days when I settled for buying the pop-rock pap of peterpan and Sheila On 7 just because they were the best Indonesia could come up with. Indonesia is developing/I am discovering a vibrant and varied scene, influenced by garage rock, jazz, trip hop, and liberal amounts of indietronica. I'm going to Indonesia on August 8-14 and am looking forward to blowing money in the music stores. The Internet! Reconnecting you to your cultural roots only to discover that they've connected to your cultural branches. Or something like that.

Mocca, "Me & My Boyfriend"
Sometimes they are poppish, sometimes they are jazzy. Overall this band doesn't impress me much, but this song does. A swing song about puppy love with a very Monty Python-esque music video. Quite charming.

The Brandals, "Lingkar Labirin"
Retro garage-rock from Jakarta. 'Berandal' in Indonesian approximates to 'scoundrel' in English. The song title translates to 'labyrinth's circle' and it's about - what else - the angst and anger of the restless youth. Also a trippy video.

You've probably seen this already. This is the BBC article, and this is the Youtube clip.

They also do Queen and selections from 'Sister Act'.
