In preparation for Thanksgiving, here are five things I'm thankful for:

1. Clean floors. Nothing beats them.
2. Organic pest controls.
3. A husband who can fix anything.
4. Isaac's sing song voice.
5. The boys' fascination with books and all things reading.

1. Isaac's smiling, tearful expression as he watched woman after woman give birth in the documentary The Business of Being Born.  He was so excited to watch the births, to see the new little babies, to witness the triumph, joy, and satisfaction cross the faces of mothers and their birth ( Read more... )

1. A cuddly and sweet-hearted Samuel.
2. Work!
3. A nearly perfect dinner soon to be served.
4. The sound of Steve's motorcycle pulling into the driveway.
5. A future of hope.

We awoke early, and I prepared food: banana bread, sweet corn with cream cheese and diced green chilies, and a salad of field greens served up with pecans, sunflower seeds, mandarin oranges and a homemade blackberry chipotle salad dressing.  We hit the road around 10am and arrived at my grandparents house just after noon.  I made a point to spend ( Read more... )

I wonder if I am alone in this.  Every year, as the holidays roll around, life gets hard.  Whether it's physical, emotional, spiritual, economic, or whatever, STUFF happens.  Trials.

Tomorrow we are scheduled to spend the day with my family -- grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, parents, siblings, and family friends.  I am to bring a corn ( Read more... )

So far it's been quite pleasant. We left for Houston late Wednesday afternoon instead of at noon like we had hoped. The reason? We were trying to set the wheels in motion to buy a house!
