Obama Wins!

Although I could not vote for the man, and I find almost all of his policies abhorrent, I am nevertheless proud of America's choice.

First, I'm glad that we've thoroughly repudiated Bush and his failed policies.

Second, I'm glad that we've elected our first black president.

Now, though, I am sad for the rude awakening that so many hopeful Americans will get somewhere in the course of the next four years.  Obama is inheriting a sinking ship -- a wrecked economy, peak oil, a failed foreign policy leading to increased security threats, and a global currency collapse.  The cards are stacked against him.  Even if he does manage to remain popular through it all, I'm positive that most of the policies he and his filibuster-proof congress will enact in response to the trying times will prolong our great decline in the same way that Hoover's and FDR's policies transformed a minor recession into The Great Depression.

Don't get me wrong, this would have happened under a McCain presidency, too.  But at least all of McCain's supporters weren't terribly enthusiastic about him, and most of them didn't harbor any strange messianic illusions about his ability to heal the world.
