I watched Bella last night.  On Metacritic, the critics gave it a 47 out of 100, but the users gave it a 7.9 out of 10.  On RottenTomatoes, the difference is even larger -- 36% from Critics, 96% from Users. How telling.

Usually, that discrepancy means that the movie appeals to the nameless Masses of pop culture.  Movies with excessive car chases, ( Read more... )

I just watched this with my fiance on Monday (I had seen it in the theatres before). I really like this movie, but he LOVED it. Said it was one of his top ten movies, and it made my big strong tough fiance cry :(

I agree with you that people will slam a movie just because it has a message they are uncomfortable with. Most movies have a "message." Most movies with a message I consider wrong on every level are termed "artful." Movies with a message you or I may agree with are called "preachy."

Yay! Another Bella fan. I want my husband to see it soon so that I can finally *talk* to him about it. I don't think Bella's in my Top Ten, but it's certainly up there. I love how redemptive it is. It's wonderful that a man who took the life of a young girl essentially ends up *saving* the life of one. PLUS, I thought it was beautifully filmed with a good soundtrack.
