I watched Bella last night. On
Metacritic, the critics gave it a 47 out of 100, but the users gave it a 7.9 out of 10. On RottenTomatoes, the difference is even larger -- 36% from Critics, 96% from Users. How telling.
Usually, that discrepancy means that the movie appeals to the nameless Masses of pop culture. Movies with excessive car chases, sex scenes, popular messages, and silly or obscene humor. Movies I don't usually like or care about. The Masses love those stupid flicks while the Critics hold their noses. It's the difference between The People's Choice Awards and The Oscars.
But Bella is different. It's a touching, warm, beautifully filmed and told story. The characters are deep and wide, the premise engaging, the acting good. Why would critics think it falls short?
Because it's unabashedly pro-life. It's so pro-life that the average Critic thinks it's "inauthentic" or "ludicrous."
