I have never been as obsessed with a TV show as I am with Veronica Mars...I spend about half-hour every day searching the internet for any and all news I can find concerning if the show will get picked up by The CW. I don't look at spoilers or anything like that.
The ratings are not good..That is a fact..But the fan base is very dedicated, and the potential is there for the series to be big. However, at this point, I don't think the audience is going to grow very much. It is definitely not a show that you can jump into in the middle and a ton of people are going to have to get caught up via the DVD's if the audience is going to really grow.
Yesterday, I came to terms with the fact that the show probably won't get renewed. I'm a pessimist, so if I prepare myself for the worst, I will be pleasantly surprised if it does get renewed. I've realized that we were very, very lucky to even get a season 2. It was the lowest rated show to get renewed last year. UPN has honestly done everything they could to promote the show, so it's definitely not a case of the network being hasty with their decision.
The show's fate is going to depend on a few things:
1. How it does in it's new Tuesday time slot..UPN is moving it back to Tuesday night starting next week...It's going to air after Gilmore Girls (but on a different network) and that's likely where it will air next season on The CW. It will no longer be in the toughest time slot on TV, against Lost and American Idol and that can only help. I think if the ratings don't improve, even slightly, then we won't get a season 3.
2. The quality of The CW's drama pilots...I think this is going to be the major factor. They are only producing 4 drama pilots and they all actually sound promising. But they don't want to start a new network with all new shows. Everwood and One Tree Hill are also on the bubble, and I think Veronica Mars has the best shot of the 3 of them of coming back, so that gives me hope also.
The most frustrating thing about the show for me is that it's so hard to describe to others..I don't even know what to tell people when they ask me what it's about. It's also very hard to advertise, and the promos do not do it justice.
But like I said, I've accepted that it proably won't be back. It's just something I spend 45 minutes a week doing and life will go on.
But just when I've accepted that, I read something like I did yesterday on "Watch With Kristen" on Eonline. She says her CW insiders told her the show has a 96% chance of coming back.
AAARRRGGHH!!...I'm all torn up inside. May 18 (the date The CW's schedule is announced) can't come quick enough.
Can you tell I'm really obsessing over this? This can't be healthy.
