The submarine made steady progress, slicing through the quiet hush of the sea. Already halfway to Poft, and they had barely exchanged more than a dozen words. Goemon sat at one of the sleek, plastic benches lining the corridor, shimmering patterns of light from the porthole window playing his face. His eyes were shut, head half-bowed as if in defeat - but his passive if inscrutable expression belied the feeling of high-wire tension wringing his stomach like a wet rag ( ... )

"Yes of course," Fujiko answered a little too quickly, still tense from the ride over and grateful for the break in silence. "So eager to get tied up?" she quipped with a small little smirk. Teasing him right now was a bad idea but it helped her take the edge off. "I know how much you missed the bondage but I'm sure you can find someone who shares your particular... kinks." It was all doled out with a precise small little smile, a small flip of the hair and finished with a viciously flirtatious wink.

She knew the dozens of ways he could or rather, would, respond to it all but that was really half of the fun. Knowing, waiting and the small edge of schadenfreude.

Cracking open his eyes, the ronin pinned her with a narrow-eyed glare; not in a swift, snappy response like a snake lashing out, but in dull reproach. He refused to indulge her further, forced to swallow back his poison. His energy, after all, was better reserved for the fight ahead.

Silence descended, heavy and sullen - and for a while he sat there, frowning as his mind toyed with her words, teasing sense out of them. There had been something heart-wrenchingly brittle about her voice, her sexually-confident haughtiness laid on too thickly, as if to form a barrier. His frown gradually softened in realization, anger leaking out of him.

"I understand Momochi is as much your enemy as he is my own..." Goemon began thoughtfully, his gaze downturned. He faltered for a moment, looking as if he meant to add something more. But pressing his lips into a solemn line, he left it at that.

Fujiko stiffened instantly, her spine rigid. Of all the ways she'd expected... that wasn't one of them. She swallowed hard, "He... is." She never bothered explaining to him that she wasn't just after his sword or she'd have stolen it a dozen times over without giving it back. She hadn't been seduced into working with just money alone and rarely was. When men though that she was the kind of girl motivated by money alone it was just easier to deal with them and there was nothing she could say he wouldn't take as a lie so why then tell the truth when it hurt and would only be used against her. "I hate him," she stated with a simple shrug, keeping her eyes focused on the ocean and directional panel in front of her. He'd managed to put her in her place this time and that just... was grinding. For the hundredth time she desperately wished Lupin was around to buffer this a little better. So she wouldn't have to deal with Goemon herself. Alone.

This time, he said nothing, solemnly absorbing every word like a sponge. Her intensity pushed hard against him like a blast of heat from a furnace. She was fragile in her anger, tragic in her firm determination to assume the worst of anyone, fear justifying the need to strike at someone believing they would be the first to jump at her throat.

If you close your eyes to everyone, you will never see those who mean to help you... Goemon verged on saying, but bit it back, sensing the message wouldn't sink past her skin ( ... )

"Stop looking at me like that," Fujiko shivered. He was pitying her and she hated that more. "I'm better on my own Goemon. That's how I want to be..." It was a lie too. She usually did do better on her own, Lupin and the others constantly messed up the plans she did alone or even when she invited them to come along. But still she crawled back to them, still seeking out Lupin to make sure he was safe no matter how hurt she got. Still trying to find someone she could trust no matter how many times she'd been shot or stabbed in the back. And she'd brought Collonello along so it was pretty obvious she didn't want to be alone. She'd stayed on the sub for so many months because every time she set herself up to run away the kids had done something to keep her there.

There was little she could hide from his gaze, his narrow-eyed squint not unfriendly, but perceptive and contemplative. For her sake, he didn't expose how transparent her feelings were despite her efforts to hold strong; he would have hoped to be spared the same way himself, were he in her position. His features took on an air of grave understanding ( ... )

"Four minutes. Don't chicken out now," she grinned easily, teasing him as a defense mechanism, slipping into that mask to hide from the rest or hide from the realities.
