Mary

I started this over the summer and just now finished. I discovered if you layer colored pencil over colored ink washes you get super saturation because the ink has already soaked into the paper and made it less "toothy"

Oooh, cool technique you discovered!

I like the symbolism that you have, and the explanation you gave. I think the iconography is really neat, you've added your own images and tied them in with a few traditional images in a really nice way. Considering the Mary that is traditionally shown is from the Renaissance, I think an update is long overdue.

The stars look really nice added in there. I like that aspect of traditional Marian imagery, so I'd like to see them in there. I would say make them blend with the style more in the finished piece, but it's a lovely image either way.

thanks:) I think I'm going to try to do some white colored pencil stars with white gouache to make the centers really opaque. They do make the image look more completed

Thank you:) It seems like that's the general consensus (about the stars), so I'm going to try to paint them in so they don't look so photoshoppy lol:)

I like the result of your artistic discoveries!

I also really admire the fact that you are drawing Mary and saints in a way that the images reflect your own personal feelings and ideas about them. There will always be purists and preconceived notions of what the subject should look like and what should be included.

I like your choices and think this is a really nice piece of art and devotional.
